Parking lots are a fact of life, but they can be dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike. Thousands of crashes occur each year in parking lots and garages, resulting in injury, death and damage to vehicles.
Whether you’re driving or walking through a parking lot, it’s important to curb bad habits and minimize the danger to yourself and others. Check out some parking lot safety tips below to protect everyone in the lot or garage.
1. Don’t use your phone.
Phone usage is a big cause of distracted driving. Resist the temptation to make calls or check notifications while entering the lot, looking for parking and leaving the lot. Looking down for even a few seconds could cause you to lose sight of a pedestrian or another car.
2. Stay aware of your surroundings.
The bigger the parking lot, the busier it may be, with intersections and traffic going in multiple directions — and other drivers may not be following the rules. Always follow directional signs and markings, stay in your designated lane and don’t cut through parking spaces. Be aware of the other cars and pedestrians around you.
3. Drive slowly.
It’s best to keep your speed below 15 mph, which gives you more time to react. You never know if another car will suddenly pull out in front of you or if a child could dart through the parking lot.
4. Park safely to protect your car.
Large parking lots, such as those at malls, can offer plenty of opportunity for thieves. To protect your car and your belongings, look for well-lit spots as close as possible to where you’re shopping. Always lock your vehicle and store valuables or recent purchases out of sight.
Safety should always be a top priority.
