When was the last time your car got a proper cleaning? You don’t have to go to a car wash to get your vehicle sparkling, but you do need to know what you’re doing.
Washing your car at home may seem like a simple chore, but it can be surprisingly easy to make mistakes that could harm your vehicle’s paint.
Gather the right supplies and follow these five recommendations for washing your vehicle correctly.
Use the proper materials.
As with any household chore, the right tools can make all the difference. For car washing at home, try to have:
Don’t wash in direct sunlight.
Washing your car on a sunny day may cause the shampoo to dry too fast, which can leave streaks or spots behind. It’s best to wash your car in a shady spot or wait for a cloudy day.
Start at the top.
Hose your car off first, then work your way from top to bottom. Soap your car with a soft cloth, and rinse it in sections. Don’t forget to wipe down your windshield wipers, too.
Dry with a microfiber cloth.
If you air-dry your car, it will leave streaks. You need to hand dry it, but regular household towels are too abrasive for your car’s paint, so pick up some microfiber cloth or chamois instead. This will keep your vehicle looking great after all your effort.
Use separate cleaning materials for the body and tires.
The tires are the dirtiest part of your car, so wash them last — separately from the rest of your car, and use a cleaning solution specifically for tires.
